Church of the Beatitudes

Sea of Galilee Destinations

The Church of the Beatitudes, located on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, was built in the 1930s by the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land. The church’s design was inspired by the traditional style of Byzantine architecture, which was prevalent in the region during the Byzantine Empire (4th-7th century CE).

First, the Church was designed by the Italian architect Antonio Barluzzi, known for creating numerous religious structures in the Holy Land. Barluzzi’s design for the Church of the Beatitudes was influenced by the shape of a conch shell, which symbolizes the miracle of the loaves and fishes that Jesus performed on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. The church’s white limestone walls are adorned with beautiful mosaics depicting the Beatitudes in Hebrew and Latin.

Furthermore, the Church of the Beatitudes interior is circular, with a central nave and an apse at the eastern end, facing the Sea of Galilee. The dome above the nave is adorned with an intricate mosaic of the dove of peace, surrounded by eight angels, each holding one of the Beatitudes. Moreover, the design of the Church of the Beatitudes was intended to evoke a sense of peace and serenity, in keeping with the message of the Sermon on the Mount. The simplicity and elegance of the church’s design, combined with its stunning location, make it a truly breathtaking structure.
