Best Hummus in Tel Aviv

Bucket List Experiences

No other food is as hotly debated as the humble hummus in Tel Aviv; which is the staple food of more than 90% of Israelis. In fact, Locals spend hours discussing this Middle Eastern delicacy which gained its popularity in Israel after the Second World War. Since then, it has become a common accompaniment to most everyday meals in Israel. Now the most popular version of hummus has the consistency of a thick soup and is served warm in a large bowl; sprinkled with parsley; cumin; and other spices. It is eaten scooped up in hot pita bread with raw onion and pickled cucumbers. So I’ve set a goal to myself finding the best hummus in Tel Aviv!

Now there is no doubt there is an abundance of hummus restaurants and cafés in Tel Aviv. All of them with different methods of making it; and offering a wide variety of textures. In fact, there are probably almost as many hummus recipes as Israelis. While there is a general consensus that hummus is delicious, opinions differ widely on the best hummus offering in Tel Aviv.  With that said, we’ve decided to make it easy for you and give you the lowdown on what we consider to be the best hummus joint in Tel Aviv, Azura.

A Hidden Gem in Tel Aviv

Tucked away in the corner of Mikve Israel Street, Azura is the little sister of the famous Azura restaurant in Jerusalem. Here you will find smooth and creamy hummus, seasoned to perfection with succulent chickpeas, olive oil, and parsley on top. Unlike the American-style hummus which tends to be less creamy and grainy in nature, Azure’s hummus owes its delectable buttercream-like texture and nutty flavor to the tahini used in the preparation. Paired with hot, fluffy pita and pickled cucumbers, there is no other hearty meal.

Azura also boasts a whole host of other delicious dishes such as beef sofrito and Kubbeh soup. And with friendly, English-speaking staff to welcome you, this place truly offers one of the Best Hummus in Israel.
