Akiva Aryeh Weiss

Founder of Tel Aviv

The bustling city of Tel Aviv, with its modern skyline and vibrant culture, has a rich history that traces its roots back to the early 20th century. At the heart of this incredible story stands a visionary leader, Akiva Aryeh Weiss, whose indomitable spirit and unwavering dedication played a pivotal role in the founding of Tel Aviv. Let’s embark on a journey to discover this iconic figure’s remarkable life and contributions.

The Birth of a Dream

Akiva Aryeh Weiss was born in Galicia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, in 1868. Driven by a deep commitment to Zionism and a desire to escape the persecution faced by Jews in Europe, Weiss immigrated to Ottoman-ruled Palestine in 1906. Little did he know that he would go on to play a central role in the creation of a new city that would shape the future of the region.

The Lottery That Shaped a City

The turning point in Tel Aviv’s history came on April 11, 1909, when Akiva Aryeh Weiss and 60 other Jewish families gathered on the dunes near Jaffa to conduct a lottery. This lottery, which they called “Goral” in Hebrew, was how they allocated plots of land they had purchased in what would later become Tel Aviv.

This initiative, driven by Weiss and his contemporaries, marked the establishment of Ahuzat Bayit, the nucleus of what we now know as Tel Aviv. The Hebrew Bible inspired the name “Tel Aviv” itself, meaning “Hill of Spring,” symbolizing hope and renewal. Specifically, the name derives from the Book of Ezekiel.
Ezekiel mentions Tel Abib in Ezekiel 3:15:

“Then I came to them of the captivity at Tel Abib, that lived by the river Chebar, and to where they lived; and I sat there overwhelmed among them seven days”
